OpenAI said its new plan to deploy six gigawatts’ worth of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. chips will help it amass massive amounts of computing power as quickly as possible. But some analysts see another motivation.

NVDA, and the companies struck a new agreement for millions of chips’ worth of computing power in September. OpenAI’s subsequent deal with AMD is a vote of confidence in the company’s products, but also “an indication that OpenAI recognizes a need to diversify its processor supplies” as it builds out its data centers, Jack Gold, president of J.Gold Associates, wrote in a note to clients earlier this week.
