Why Broadcom’s OpenAI deal may not be all it’s cracked up to be

Another chipmaking heavyweight will help OpenAI in its pursuit of computing power, and while investors were enthused about the deal, one analyst said he sees a bold move that could end in a correction.

The artificial-intelligence startup announced earlier this week that it will deploy 10 gigawatts’ worth of custom chips with Broadcom Inc.

AVGO to support its data-center buildout. OpenAI plans to design the accelerators, develop and deploy them with the chip company starting in the second half of next year and complete the rollout by 2029. Broadcom will provide the ethernet networking to scale the deployment.
