U.S. stocks were mixed at the open on Friday after futures pared big losses from overnight.
The Dow was little-changed at 45,946.
The S&P 500 was off by 20 points, or 0.3%, at 6,609.
The Nasdaq Composite was off by 118 points, or 0.5%, at 22,449.
Traders credited comments from President Trump for helping to ease investors’ concerns about the simmering trade conflict with China.
Asked by Fox Business’s Maria Bartiromo whether the 100% tariff on China would stand, Trump replied: “It’s not sustainable, but that’s what the number is.” Futures moved sharply higher shortly after a clip from the interview, which included the comment, was released.
Concerns about banks’ credit losses remained front and center for markets after sparking a selloff that sent the Cboe Volatility Index above 25 on Thursday.
