The Lexus LX is the longest SUV among the four, followed closely by the Defender and then the Land Cruiser 300. While the Mercedes G-Class is the shortest in length, it’s the widest and even taller than the other three SUVs. The Defender claws some ground with the longest wheelbase, while the others are more compact between the axles. Ground clearance on the Defender varies widely depending on suspension setup, giving it more flexibility than the others, which offer a fixed height. Its approach, departure and breakover angles, along with water wading capacity, are also the most off-road focused.

Looking at the table above, the Mercedes G 450d clearly leads the pack in engine output. Its 367hp and 750Nm give it a noticeable edge over the others, even before counting the extra inputs from the mild-hybrid system. The Defender 110 comes next with 350hp and 700Nm, which places it closer to the Lexus LX 500d and Toyota Land Cruiser 300 on torque, but ahead on power.

The Lexus and Toyota are identical under the hood, both running a 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 with 309hp and 700Nm. They rely on 10-speed automatics, giving them the widest spread of ratios in this set. The G 450d follows with a 9-speed unit, while the Defender uses an 8-speed unit. All four come with 4WD as standard, keeping their off-road credentials intact.
