Mercedes-Benz India has brought back the diesel engine option for its G-Class off-roader after a year-long hiatus. At the start of the year, the G-Wagen line-up expanded with the all-electric G 580 with EQ Tech, which joined the range-topping AMG G 63. With the addition of the Mercedes G 450d, launched at Rs 2.9 crore, the G-Class is now available in petrol, diesel and EV form. Only 50 G-Class diesels have been brought into India in the first batch.

Considering its price tag of Rs 2.9 crore, before options, the G 450d costs Rs 20 lakh less than the all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology. On the other hand, the G 450d’s closest rival, the range-topping Land Rover Defender 110 diesel Trophy Edition, costs a whopping Rs 1.6 crore less, at Rs 1.3 crore.

367hp six-cylinder 3.0-litre diesel engine gets up to 20hp boost from 48V mild-hybrid system

The G 450d is more powerful than its predecessors (G 350d and G 400d) which were on sale in India previously. Compared to the G 400d, the G 450d’s 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine makes 367hp (up by 37hp) and 750Nm (up by 50Nm) of peak torque. The 48V mild-hybrid system assists with up to 20hp when required. Power is sent to all-four wheels via a 9-speed automatic gearbox.
Mercedes claims a 0-100kph time of 5.8 seconds, and a top speed of 210kph. In terms of off-road ability, the Mercedes G 450d sports a 241mm ground clearance between the axles, a maximum fording depth of 700mm, and approach, breakover and departure angles of 31 degrees, 26 degrees and 30 degrees, respectively. Mercedes also claims the G 450d will drive stably on sideward slopes of up to 35 degrees.

Gets new grille, bumpers and alloy wheels over now discontinued G 400d

While the G 450d looks quite similar to the G 400d that was on sale until 2024, there are a few changes. The grille now gets 4 horizontal slats finished in chrome, new 20-inch AMG alloy wheels, and slightly redesigned front and rear bumpers. On the inside, the G 450d feels familiar, from the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that run the latest MBUX NTG7 software to the augmented reality navigation function that helps during off-roading along with the ‘transparent bonnet’ function.
Feature highlights include Nappa leather upholstery, customisable ambient lighting, and a 760W 18-speaker Burmester sound system with Dolby Atmos. A Level 2 ADAS suite, which includes active brake assist, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera, is standard.
