Mercedes-Benz G 450d returns in India with diesel power, priced at Rs. 2.9 crores
Mercedes-Benz India has reintroduced the diesel variant of its iconic G-Class with the launch of the G 450d, priced at Rs. 2.9 crores (ex-showroom). This marks the return of the diesel-powered G-Wagen after a year-long pause, joining the all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology and the high-performance AMG G 63. The company has allocated just 50 units of the G 450d for the Indian market in its initial batch.
Performance and Powertrain
Under the hood, the G 450d packs a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that delivers 367 HP and 750 Nm of torque, supported by a 48V mild-hybrid system offering an additional 20 HP boost when needed. Power is transmitted to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission. Mercedes claims a 0-100 km/hr acceleration time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/hr.
In terms of off-road performance, the G 450d offers impressive capabilities, including a 241 mm ground clearance, 700 mm fording depth and approach, breakover and departure angles of 31°, 26° and 30°, respectively. The SUV can also maintain stability on side slopes of up to 35°.
Design and Features
While retaining the G-Class’s trademark boxy silhouette, the G 450d differentiates itself with subtle exterior updates such as a chrome-finished grille with four horizontal slats, redesigned bumpers and new 20-inch AMG alloy wheels.
Inside, the cabin continues Mercedes’ focus on luxury, featuring Nappa leather upholstery, customizable ambient lighting and a 760W 18-speaker Burmester sound system with Dolby Atmos. The dual 12.3-inch displays – one for the digital instrument cluster and the other for infotainment, run on the latest MBUX NTG7 interface and include augmented reality navigation and a “transparent bonnet” feature for enhanced off-road visibility. A Level 2 ADAS suite with active brake assist, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera is standard.
Price and Positioning
At Rs. 2.9 crores, the Mercedes G 450d undercuts the all-electric G 580 by Rs. 20 lakhs but remains Rs. 1.6 crore costlier than the Land Rover Defender 110 Diesel Trophy Edition, its nearest rival in the segment. Despite the premium, the G 450d appeals to enthusiasts seeking the blend of traditional diesel torque and modern hybrid efficiency within the iconic G-Class design.
