August 2025 car sales highlight Citroën’s struggles and shifting EV market trends
The Indian passenger vehicle market witnessed some surprising numbers in August 2025, with several premium models and electric vehicles reporting minimal sales. According to the latest industry data, these are the 20 cars with the lowest sales last month.
Citroën’s Limited Progress In India
Citroën continues to face challenges in India, with most of its portfolio appearing on this list. While the C3 hatchback delivered over 300 units, models like the C5 Aircross, Basalt, eC3 and C3 Aircross recorded far lower figures. Despite offering decent products and roping in a high-profile brand ambassador, the French automaker still struggles with brand trust and awareness among Indian buyers.
Mahindra EV Strategy In Transition
The Mahindra XUV400 saw modest sales of 66 units. The decline is attributed to newer premium EVs from Mahindra itself, like the XEV 9e and BE 6, that are attracting more attention. The XUV400 may soon be phased out in favour of an electric variant of the XUV 3XO, which is expected to be better equipped and more appealing.
Skoda’s Attempt To Revive Kodiaq
The Skoda Kodiaq closed August with 75 units. However, the recent launch of a more affordable “Lounge” variant priced at Rs. 40 lakhs (ex-showroom) is expected to bring some momentum to the brand’s flagship SUV.
Kia’s EV Lineup Faces Mixed Results
The Kia EV6 posting zero sales came as a surprise, as the car is fairly visible on Indian roads. Buyers could be holding out for festive-season offers. The EV9, on the other hand, remains a low-volume model due to its premium pricing and limited availability, making zero sales less unexpected.
Premium Imports And Niche Models
- The Volkswagen Golf GTI registered 36 units, which is notable considering its CBU import status and niche audience.
- Toyota’s Land Cruiser 300 recorded 15 units, a figure that appears respectable given its pricing and exclusivity.
- Jeep’s Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, however, continue to post underwhelming numbers despite their global brand value.
Other Observations
The Hyundai IONIQ 5, Toyota Rumion, MG Gloster and Kia Carnival are also among models with low sales. Meanwhile, older offerings like the Mahindra Marazzo are losing relevance in a market that is getting more desirable MPVs.
