The new FJ shares its boxy silhouette and upright stance with the larger Land Cruiser Prado, but its IMV platform is shared with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Hilux. The Land Cruiser FJ is 4,575mm long, 1,855mm wide, 1,960mm tall, and has a wheelbase that is 2,580mm long; the wheelbase is 270mm shorter than the Prado.

Despite the smaller dimensions, the new FJ is claimed to be a capable off-roader. Toyota says that it has comparable ground clearance (215.3mm) and approach angle (31 degrees) to the Prado, with a 5.5m turning radius. The Japanese brand also says that the new FJ offers wheel articulation equivalent to the much larger 70 Series, and that it has added braces under the floor and ensured higher body rigidity, which is meant to enhance the FJs handling prowess.

Design highlights of the new FJ include the chunky bumpers (which are said to be removable to allow for replacement or customisation) and side cladding that runs from the front to the rear, along with C-shaped light units. Interstingly, the 4×4 can also be had with round headlights that are inspired by previous generations of Land Cruisers. The rear sports an external spare wheel.

On the inside, the new FJ sports a layout that is familiar from the Prado, from the circular air-con vents to the large grab handles on the A-pillar, though the dashboard design is more utilitarian, and materials used lean towards hard-wearing rather than plush. There’s a central 12.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, a simple digital instrument cluster, a chunky gearlever, and physical buttons and switches. Among the features confirmed is Toyota’s Safety Sense ADAS suite.

New Toyota Land Cruiser FJ engine and gearbox

163hp 2.7-litre petrol engine and 6-speed automatic are standard

The new FJ is powered by a 2.7-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 163hp and 246Nm of peak torque. Output is sent via a 6-speed automatic gearbox to all-four wheels via a part-time 4WD system.

There’s no word yet on whether Toyota will bring the Land Cruiser FJ to India any time soon. The larger Prado is set to make its way here, though a timeline is unclear.
